TIROL is a federal state in western Austria. It comprises the Austrian part of the historic Princely County of TIROL, corresponding with the present-day Euroregion Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino. The capital of TIROL is Innsbruck.

Tirol borders on the federal state of Salzburg in the east and on Vorarlberg in the west, in the north it adjoins the German state of Bavaria, and in the south the Italian Trentino-Alto Adige region (South Tyrol) as well as the Swiss canton of Graubuenden. Tirol also borders on the federal state of Carinthia in the east and on the Italian Province of Belluno (Veneto) in the south. With a land area of 12,647.71 km2 (4,883.31 sq mi), it is the third largest state in Austria.

The stateʹs territory is entirely located in the Eastern Alps at the important Brenner Pass. The highest mountain in the state is the Grossglockner within the Hohe Tauern range at the border with Carinthia, with an elevation of 3,797 m (12,457.35 ft.) it is also the highest mountain of Austria.

The capital Innsbruck is known for its university, especially in medicine. TIROL is popular for its famous ski resorts, which include Kitzbuehel, Ischgl and St. Anton, and has 11 cities including Innsbruck.

.TIROL is the independent top-level domain of the Community of Tirolers worldwide on the Internet. The regional domain names available with .TIROL are concise and create a unique and individual identity for inhabitants, organisations, institutions and local authorities that are based in the federal state of TIROL or having a business, cultural, touristical, social, private or other relationship with the Austrian Federal State of Tirol. Companies and individuals providing and looking for information, goods and services in TIROL can thus intuitively come together. The .TIROL domain names strengthen the feeling of community amongst Tirolers, improve communication and enhance interaction, thus providing a stimulus for innovation and development. The purpose reflects and incorporates the relationship towards the local conditions and the local interests of the relevant authorities, inhabitants and organizations. The needs of the Community in terms of the .TIROL top-level domain are defined in order to serve the purpose:

(i) To give the region of Tirol, the Tirolers worldwide, their locations and their organisations their own digital identity in the Internet with individual .TIROL domain names.

(ii) To create a new namespace with attractive .TIROL domain names which are (a) demanded by the Community and which (b) each member of the community may register and (c) are likely to create more and better search engine positions for the Community members.

(iii) To facilitate an intuitive search and access approach for Tirol-associated content and service for inhabitants, tourists, investors, organizations and administration by a reasonable namespace management including (a) the reservation and delegation of generic category domain names for special purposes such as marketing, directory services or for the support of the regional location marketing activities, (b) measures to mitigate domain-grabbing, cyber-squatting, speculation and other unlawful activities

(iv) To stimulate an active use of .TIROL domain names by inhabitants, organizations and administration for websites, email and other domain name related services by creating awareness and offering support and to do so especially for individual inhabitants and SMEs.
