Surfing has enthusiastic following among both professional and amateur surfers. The goal of the .SURF top-level domain is to give surfers of all experience levels a place to share ideas about methods, tips, equipment, and surfing locations. Manufacturers of surfing equipment, competition organizers and teachers will also benefit from the .SURF gTLD. The total surf industry market is an estimated $7.22 billion per year. (Source: http:⁄⁄www.sima.com⁄news-information⁄news-detail⁄id⁄68.aspx) Surfing Magazine, established in 1964, has nearly 70,000 subscribers, and can be found in 19,000 newsstands and surf shops. According to the magazine, the typical surfer is male (73% of all subscribers) with a median age of 19. The average surfer has a median household yearly income is $69,700, spends an average 150 days per year surfing and has been surfing for 8.9 years. The average amount spent on surfing each year is $2,500. (Source:http:⁄⁄www.grindmedia.com⁄magazines⁄surfing-magazine-circulation-demographics⁄) According to a report by Surfrider.org, in their study of 4,000 surfers, 90% of surfers were male, the median age was 34, 62% had attended college, and were employed full-time earning $75,000 per year. They owned on average 4 surfboards, made 108 visits to a surfing beach per year, and averaged a $66 expenditure per visit. Using these statistics, the range of economic impact from US surfers per year is between $2 billion and $5 billion. (Source:http:⁄⁄public.surfrider.org⁄files⁄surfrider_report_v13.pdf) The .SURF top-level domain will offer professional and amateur surfers the opportunity to better connect with one another and create a system of support for their common passion. The .SURF domain will also allow surfing equipment companies the chance to better engage with their customers, helping them to make more informed purchasing decisions while also helping generate the public’s interest in surfing. |
