Mission / Purpose (#18a) | |
The National Rifle Association (NRA) consists of hundreds of affiliated partners, projects and programs, many of them with their own identities and domain names. These institutions range from training and education programs to law enforcement services and programs for women and youth. They also encompass scores of affiliated and volunteer-run programs that currently operate under different identities. The National Rifle Association, chartered in 1871, is not only the oldest and largest civil liberties organization in the United States, with 4.5 million members, but also the premier firearms education organization in the world. NRA is recognized as a major political force and as Americaʹs foremost defender of Second Amendment rights. The NRA works to promote public safety, the shooting sports, hunter safety, and firearms training. NRA is seeking to obtain control of the .NRA gTLD, which will allow NRA to control all domains and content within the TLD, completely preventing unwanted activity by for-profit traders of domain names and cybersquatters. Among other advantages, this control will provide NRA opportunities to: a) connect its members and partners in an NRA-controlled community that can reinforce relationships, and b) create and host new online services and products with close association to NRA’s brand. An .NRA gTLD would provide the means to link all of our existing programs and affiliations together, avoiding confusion and providing an assurance of the origin and integrity of information to members, affiliated organizations, governments, the general public and other stakeholders with whom we work. An .NRA gTLD would also signal that a program or company under the domain retains the characteristics of the NRA itself: excellence in communicating our core message, facilitation of programs and projects, efficient connection to members and stakeholders, and a clear identity and presence on the Internet. This application is therefore largely based on the need to reinforce and secure a reputation earned over the last 141 years and to differentiate NRA in ways that reduce complexity and aids understanding of the mission and purpose of NRA. We believe both aims would be beneficial to key stakeholders and the general public. Driven by this dynamic, we expect to have 500 domains under Management (DUMs) after three years. |
