Mission / Purpose (#18a) | |
MISSION⁄PURPOSE OF THE .IINET TLD The mission⁄purpose of the .iinet TLD is to promote the business of iiNet Limited, one of Australia’s largest internet service providers. Connect West Pty Ltd (Connect West), a wholly-owned subsidiary of iiNet Limited, is the applicant for the .iinet TLD. From humble beginnings in 1993, iiNet Limited has become an established leader of the Australian communications industry and wishes to extend that leadership further by applying for the .iinet TLD. The iiNet group of companies provides a variety of Internet and telecommunications services nationally. Over its eighteen year history, iiNet has grown to be an ASX-listed company. Connect West is a leading domain registrar, with over fifteen years’ experience as the registrar of asn.au domains. It is accredited by auDA, the .au Domain Administration, and as a result of the exciting changes to the domain name space in Australia, Connect West now also offers registration services for the .com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .asn.au and .id.au name spaces. Connect West sees the .iinet TLD as a unique opportunity to consolidate its brand and online presence. The .iinet TLD will also serve to meet the current and future needs of Connect West and its iiNet customer base by providing an agile platform which is able to adapt rapidly as the internet and Connect West’s use of it matures. Connect West envisions that the .iinet TLD will be one of the first Top Level Domains dedicated solely to the provision of content for one single brand. This content will serve to promote the business of Connect West whilst providing an online corporate home for the Connect West business. This has the potential to strengthen the company’s strong commitment to and reputation for innovation within the communications industry. New .iinet domain names and content on .iinet websites will serve the digital needs of the iiNet brand and facilitate clear and consistent engagement with customers by Connect West. The TLD will ensure that Connect West’s digital presence is capable of fulfilling the needs of the company’s growing customer base and the ever-changing, ever-expanding Internet landscape. To enable this TLD operating model, Connect West intends to request an exemption from clause 1b of the Registry Operator Code of Conduct (Specification 9) pursuant to clause 6 of the Code of Conduct to enable it to register domain names in its own right in the .iinet TLD. Registrations will not be made commercially available; all domain name registrations in the TLD will be registered to and maintained by Connect West for its own exclusive use. Connect West will not sell, distribute or transfer control or use of any registration in the TLD to any third party that is not an affiliate, as that term is defined in clause 2.9(c) of the Registry Agreement. iiNet plans to consolidate its online presence by transitioning existing iiNet domain names and online platforms to an authoritative, dedicated, and trusted online space that is clearly, concisely and relevantly named. iiNet customers – current and prospective – will be able to interact with Connect West in the online environment with confidence. Domain names will be used to market iiNet products, services and promotions in support of Connect West’s core business strategies. The use of an authoritative space will also help to reduce and⁄or eliminate domain names that are registered for the purposes of infringing the iiNet trademark. The .iinet TLD will contribute to building the reputation of Connect West and the iiNet brand. In addition, it will clearly evidence Connect West’s commitment to leadership and innovation within the communications sector. The .iinet TLD will allow for domain name registrations in support of iiNet products, services, and other initiatives, whilst providing a high level of service, quality, authenticity and value through a technologically advanced online environment in which Internet users can learn about and access Connect West’s iiNet products and services. The .iiNet TLD will further the public interest by providing consumers a dedicated, authoritative, intuitive and cohesive communications channel to a single brand. Through the .iinet TLD, Connect West will drive innovation not only in its own industry, but in the Internet as a whole. Having already demonstrated this innovation and leadership in its own industry, iiNet hopes to provide existing and potential customers as well as the broader Internet community greater levels of service through the .iiNet TLD. The added confidence inherent in Connect West being the only eligible registrant in the TLD will ensure a direct and trusted line of communication between consumers and Connect West. This innovation, increase in service level and trust in the TLD will also serve to promote competition on the Internet. |
