Mission / Purpose (#18a)
As companies and businesses continues to grow internationally, they will need a domain name that reflects their brand, business and vision.

The key market for .global is companies and organizations with a global approach. In many ways the world is “shrinking” in the sense that companies and organizations have increased or are able to increase their global presence compared to the situation before the Internet was introduced for the mass market.

Several gTLDs have been introduced since 2000, but none have a main focus on or a target market for “the globe”.

Even though the Internet enables a borderless structure for communication, the majority of the present top level extensions are specialised. Examples of this are: .ASIA for the Asian region, .MOBI for for cell- and smartphones content in addition to sponsored TLDs such as .CAT for the Catalan culture and language.

The country code TLDs (ccTLDs) clearly indicate a national market even though more ccTLDs have revised their domain name policies to include not only their corresponding population.

The .global top level is categorized as a “first come - first served” top level. The registration policy (reference #18B) does not prevent individuals acquiring a .global second level registration, but the pricing policy for .global may not be tuned for the private mass market. However, the business model for .global includes a pricing scheme that still makes it possible for individuals and non-profit organizations with a low budget to register their preferred domain names on the second level.

The .global top level will be introduced to the market with an option to register second level domain names in non-ASCII (IDN registrations). The languages and scripts that are available are the most common for the Europe and US. IDN registrations are common in the present gTLD market and enabled for the majority of European ccTLDs.

The word “global” has a broad understanding internationally and does not have a meaning that may create consumer confusion.

.global will be governed under Norwegian law and jurisdiction where there is a high focus on consumer protection and privacy. Please also see our response to #18B5.

The .global top level will be introduced in a proper way and maintained by CloudNames staff who have a wide and long experience in the domain name market.

The CloudNames management team have many years experience in the domain name industry. Rolf Larsen, CEO of CloudNames, founded the ISP RiksNett in 1995 (which was later acquired by the Swedish Telco Telia) and Active 24 (aka Active ISP) in 1998. Both companies challenged the existing telco and hosting companies in Europe. Active 24 became one of the first ICANN-accredited registrars and grew to be one of the top five hosting companies in Europe within 2 years. CloudNames’ CFO, CTO, VP Products and Services and other members of the staff have extensive experience working in both RiksNett and Active 24.
