Mission / Purpose (#18a)

The .archi gTLD is a new gTLD string exclusively reserved to a community consisting of:
- Architects who are members of the International Union of Architects (UIA);
- Architecture Firms that employ one or more architects who are members of the UIA;
- Companies or associations that employ one or more architects who are members of the UIA;
- List of architecture schools, museums, professional press⁄media, defined by the .archi Policy Advisory Committee in collaboration with the UIA and its member sections.

In at least 8 languages, “archi” is a well-known short-form of “architect”, which is the community the .archi gTLD intends to serve:
- “archi”, short-form for “architecte” in French;
- “archi”, short-form for “Architekt” in German;
- “archi”, short-form for “architect” in English;
- “archi”, short-form for “architekt” in Polish;
- “archi”, short-form for “architekt” in Czech;
- “archi”, short-form for “architetto” in Italian;
- “archi”, short-form for “architektas” in Lithuanian;
- “archi”, short-form for “architekt” in Slovak.

Accordingly, the .archi gTLD’s purpose will be understood by an estimate of 700 million Internet users.

However, given the wide usage of English within the international architecture scene, Starting Dot is convinced that the .archi gTLD will gain rapid international acceptance and recognition.

According to the International Union of Architects (UIA), which has officially endorsed Starting Dot’s application for the. archi gTLD, the practice of architecture consists of the provision of professional services in connection with town planning and the design, construction, enlargement, conservation, restoration, or alteration of a building or group of buildings. These professional services include, but are not limited to:
- Planning and land-use planning;
- Urban design;
- Provision of preliminary studies;
- Designs;
- Models;
- Drawings;
- Specifications and technical documentation;
- Coordination of technical documentation prepared by others (consulting engineers, urban planners, landscape architects and other specialist consultants) as appropriate and without limitation;
- Construction economics;
- Contract administration;
- Monitoring of construction (referred to as “supervision” in some countries);
- Project management.

The designation “architect” is generally reserved by law or custom to a person who is professionally and academically qualified and generally registered⁄licensed⁄certified to practice architecture in the jurisdiction in which he or she practices and is responsible for advocating the fair and sustainable development, welfare, and the cultural expression of society’s habitat in terms of space, forms, and historical context.

Architects have been practicing their art and science since Antiquity. The profession as we know it today has undergone extensive growth and change. The profile of architects’ work has become more demanding, clients’ requirements and technological advances have become more complex, and social and ecological imperatives have grown more pressing. These changes have spawned changes in services and collaboration among the many parties involved in the design and construction process.

Into this growing and regulated scene, the .archi gTLD will provide Internet users with a clear and unambiguous identifier that is directly linked to architecture, increase consumer trust with dedicated spaces and promote free and healthy competition among registered⁄licensed⁄certified architects.
