Mission / Purpose (#18a)
The purpose of the .ABOGADO top-level domain is to offer licensed attorneys an exclusive opportunity to present themselves on the Internet to a Spanish-speaking audience. Attorneys wanting to use a domain name to indicate their legal status as a licensed attorney are unable to do that currently by their choice of any legacy top-level domain. Because registration and renewal in the .ABOGADO TLD will require applicants and registrants to prove they authorized to provide legal services and to represent that they provide services and advice in Spanish. The .ABOGADO TLD will serve as a means of identifying and authenticating registrants as duly licensed attorneys of law in their particular jurisdiction. Internet users, particularly potential clients or persons dealing with a .ABOGADO registrant, will do so with confidence they are dealing with an appropriately licensed attorney at law with Spanish-language skills.

“Abogado” is Spanish for lawyer. There are a number of Spanish speakers throughout the Internet-using world. In fact, of the 1,463,632,361 Internet users, 124,714,378 of them are Spanish speakers (8.52%). (http:⁄⁄www.spanishseo.org⁄resources⁄worldwide-spanish-speaking-population).

Spanish speakers make up more than 12% of the population of the United States, making Spanish the second most common language in the US. (Source: Selected Social Characteristics in the United States: 2007; United States Census Bureau.)

The number of Spanish speakers in the United States has been on a steady rise since the turn of the century, with a 405% growth in Spanish Internet users during 2000-08 compared to a 305.5 % for all other languages. (http:⁄⁄www.futuretakes.org〉, Tim Mack, Vol. 8, No. 2, Fall-Winter 2009-2010, (accessed 12-14-2012). This group represents a considerable part of the US workforce and can be seen at all levels serving in various jobs across the spectrum.

According to the American Bar Association, there were 1,128,729 resident and active attorneys in the United States in 2006 and 1,143,358 in 2007. (Source: http:⁄⁄www.syvjournal.com, citing the American Bar Association, (accessed 3-12-2012). Of these, a significant number market specifically to the Spanish-speaking population, both in the United States and abroad.

Spanish speakers in the United States need the services provided by attorneys but too often lack the ability to find them. A .ABOGADO domain will help fill this gap.

We aim to offer all licensed attorneys the opportunity to advertise their legal services and related products and information on the Internet in association with a TLD acting as a badge or symbol identifying their special legal status as a licensed attorney and willingness and ability to provide their services in Spanish.
